Farmer shot, killed in Mpumalanga

Two day workers allegedly burgled a farm house in Brakfontein near Leslie, Secunda, and later used the farmer’s gun to kill him, Mpumalanga police said on Thursday.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the two men broke into the farm house around noon on Wednesday. No one was home at the time.

The men stole implements, appliances and two firearms from the house – a .38 special and a Browning shotgun.

They loaded the stolen goods onto trailer and drove away in a tractor with the goods in tow. While driving towards a nearby farm the tractor broke down.

As the men walked towards the main road, they flagged down the farmer, whose house they had burgled earlier, and pretended to ask for directions.

In and on the back of the farmer’s white bakkie (registration CJK 288 MP) were the 42-year-old farmer, his wife, two children and an employee.

One of the day workers drew one of the farmer’s firearms and shot him. His wife, children and employee ran away after the shot was fired.

The two day workers pulled the bleeding man out of the vehicle and left him on the ground before driving off. A foreman on the farm discovered the farmer and took him to hospital, but he died on the way.

The stolen property and the browning shotgun were recovered. The bakkie and the .38 special were still missing.

Arrests were expected very soon because the workers were known, said Khoabane.

Police appealed to anyone with information on the men’s whereabouts or other information relevant to the case to contact Leslie police on 017-683-0045 or the national Crime Stop number 08600-10111. – Sapa
