Police have released the first name and photograph of the gardener who allegedly murdered an 82-year-old Somerset West man and injured his wife.
The gardener known only as Douglas, is accused of strangling Robert Stanton to death and assaulting Stanton’s wife Elsie last week. He apparently promised to come back to kill her, before running away.
The man worked for the couple over the past two years.
Police spokesperson, Susan Jantjies said the suspect was on the run, but that police would continue to look for him.
He had been doing some maintenance on the house on Saturday morning when the attack took place.
Police said earlier that it appeared an argument broke out between Robert Stanton and the gardener.
Mrs Stanton heard the commotion and went outside.
Douglas then allegedly tried to strangle her but she was able to fend him off by biting him. He jumped over the garden wall and ran off.
She activated the alarm system in her home and went looking for her husband. She found him in an upright position underneath a tree.
Police said he had a paint rag stuffed down his throat and a belt had been tied around his neck.
His wife called an ambulance but he died before it arrived.
Jantijies said the autopsy revealed the cause of death to be strangulation.
